National Museum – Kandy

This museum houses over 5000 artefacts on Kandyan era, post British colonial era such as, weapons, jewelry, tools and other artifacts from the Kandian era (17-19th Century) and post British Colonial era, including a copy of the 1815 agreement that handed over the Kandyan provinces to the British. In the grounds of the museum is a statue of Sir Henry Ward a former Governor of Ceylon (1855–1860), which was originally located in front of the Queen’s Hotel.

International Buddhist Museum

The museum was established with the contributions of 17 countries. This museum is the world’s first Buddhist museum to study about Buddhism. This museum has 17 sections devoted to various countries that has connections with Buddhism. The first section of the museum displays Chinese Buddhist history and other sections are devoted to Korea, Japan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia,Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia , Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal and Bangladesh respectively.

Highway Museum

Highway museum in Kiribathkubura is the first highway museum in Sri Lanka. collection of former construction equipment such as stone road rollers, steam road rollers, oil road rollers, tar boilers, coal scales, road signs, etc.

This museum aims at imparting knowledge on agriculture to public and school children. This museum includes the instruments and methods of related to farming and agriculture

Ceylon Tea Museum

The museum exhibits tea pioneers, vintage tea-processing paraphernalia. The museum consists of four floors. The ground floor and the second floor exhibit very old items of machinery and the first floor consist of a library and an auditorium with facilities for audio visual presentations. The third floor is allocated to tea sales outlets, where a selection of Sri Lanka’s fine tea is available. The entire top floor is a tea cafe. A panoramic view of the Kandy town surrounded by the beautiful Hunasgiriya, Knuckles Range and the Matale range of hills can be viewed through a telescope mounted on the fourth floor. The grounds surrounding the Tea Museum are landscaped with different varieties of teas.

Ceylon Printing Museum

Ceylon Printing Museum is the only Printing museum in Sri Lanka , located in Kandy area. It contains details about the Ceylon printing history. Ceylon printing museum is incorporated to save and preserve printing equipment’s, Machinery and library materials associated with the Sri Lankan printing history.

Archaeological museum in Kandy (Regional)

This museum is situated in the former King’s Palace at the Temple of the Tooth, this modest museum features artefacts from around the area, including pots, masonry and carvings.

 

 

Aluvihare Temple Museum

A museum for palm leaf writings is attached to the ancient temple.It contains antiquities from the site of Aluvihare, copies of Tripitaka, old ‘Balume ge’ depicting punishments to crimes committed during ‘times of the kings’.
