Seven civilians were shot by the Police on Jan 10 1974 during the awards ceremony which followed the fourth World Tamil Research Conference held in Jaffna from Jan 3-9 1974 under Mr Alfred Duriappah’s Mayorship.
This memorial survived three decades of war and was not destroyed by the SLA either. It is located opposite Weerasingham Hall and has been renovated and re-painted post-war.
