On October 30th 1995, the LTTE ordered all residents of the Jaffna peninsula to vacate their homes and to move into the Vanni region, ahead of a major Sri Lankan military offensive to re-capture the town of Jaffna. This resulted in a mass exodus of over half a million, panic stricken Tamils resulting in the abandonment of the old and the infirm and the death of many who were crushed in the stampede or who were too ill or exhausted to complete their journey.
