Our memory walks are based on in-depth research that have been refined over the past 7 years, into engaging and interactive experiences, which offer the exploration of diverse historical narratives across various locations in Sri Lanka. We have conducted over 20 walks (including special walks on request) last year, under the guidance of our experts Prof. Asoka de Zoysa (English) and Dr. Ganga Dissanayaka (Sinhala). Themes include, ‘The Heritage Odyssey: Pettah Walk’, ‘The Town Within the City: Havelock Town’ and ‘Wheels of Modernity: Maradana’ among others. The ‘Paru, pots and pagodas: Kelaniya’ is our newest walk!
The walks set out to explore Colombo’s historic environment by addressing a certain locality or event and the memories attached it, highlighting important historical sites and events that have affected the region over time resulting in the rich cultural landscape that defines the character of our city.
From the grand buildings of the city centre, the market stalls of Pettah and the schools, churches, mosques, temples and dwellings of Colombo’s suburbs, the walks are not only meant to introduce participants to different aspects of Colombo’s history but also to introduce them to communities with diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity and religion, in order to increase acceptance and understanding of different cultures and people.
As dialogue invites discovery, the walks set out to encourage debate and discussion. Inviting participants to exchange information, share personal stories and experiences and freely express their perspectives. The primary aim of the walks is to raise people’s awareness and deepen their understanding about the city in which they live, helping them see their neighbourhoods with new eyes and learn about neighbourhoods they wouldn’t ordinarily visit.
